- Each game consists of 10 frames.
- You get up to two rolls per frame to knock down all 10 pins.
- Strike = all 10 pins on the first roll (marked “X”). You get 10 points plus the next two rolls as bonus.
- Spare = all 10 pins in two rolls (marked “/”). You get 10 points plus the next roll as bonus.
- Open frame = pins left standing after two rolls. You score only the pins knocked down.
- Stay behind the foul line when throwing.
- Only one person on the approach at a time.
- Wait for the pinsetter to finish before bowling.
- Return rental shoes to the counter when finished.
Good etiquette makes the game more enjoyable for everyone:
- Wait for the bowler on your right to go first (right-of-way rule).
- Don’t talk loudly or distract someone who is in their approach.
- Keep food and drinks away from the lanes.
- Use the ball return carefully — don’t slam balls.
- If you need to cross in front of another lane, wait until they have finished their shot.
- Clean socks (required for rental shoes)
- Comfortable clothing that allows movement
- Optional: your own bowling shoes and ball (once you’re hooked)
- Water or a small snack (check alley rules)
- Using a ball that is too heavy
- Rushing your approach or swinging too hard
- Ignoring lane courtesy (distracting others)
- Forgetting to wipe your ball after each shot
- Getting discouraged after a few bad frames — everyone starts somewhere
- Start with a lighter ball (10–14 lb for most adults) until your form improves.
- Focus on a smooth, consistent approach rather than power.
- Aim for the arrows on the lane instead of the pins.
- Keep your wrist straight and follow through toward your target.
- Have fun and don’t worry too much about your score on the first few games.
